Frequently asked questions

For your convenience, the most commonly asked questions are answered right here.

Q: How do you determine your architectural fees?

A: We use a fixed fee percentage based on a building cost estimate agreed upon by both the owners and Harmon Architects.  The cost estimate is determined by the size (enclosed living, covered lanais and garage) and complexity of the requested home design.

Q: How long does it take to design a home?

A: Each homeowners association has different design review requirements, but for a typical project it takes approximately 5 – 6 months to complete the design, reviews and construction documents.

Q: What can I expect to get at the end of the project?

A: You will receive PDF and hard copies of the construction documents required to build the home.  The documents include: civil, landscape, architectural and structural drawings, outline specifications and a color sample materials sheet.

Q: Do I need to submit my plans for approval or do you handle that?

A: Harmon Architects, Inc. will submit for the required design reviews.  Typically the General Contractor or a permit expeditor will submit for County of Maui permits.

Q: How do you handle disputes?

A: Per our AIA Contract we handle disputes with an arbitrator.  I am proud to say that since opening Harmon Architects, Inc. we have not gone into arbitration on any project to date.
